Hey there, darling. I drew you a decapitated saint for Valentine's Day.

Yeah, I'm doing that stubborn reinterpret-the-holiday-in-a-technically-incorrect-but-still-vaguely-amusing-way thing again.

This, my friends, is Saint Valentine. He was a Roman priest and physician in the first century. He is the patron saint of love/lovers, young people, happy marriages, the betrothed, apiarists/bee keepers, Bussolengo (in Italy), and greeting card manufacturers. It's his job to prevent epilepsy, fainting and plague.
He is commonly depicted with birds, roses, crippled/epiliptic children, while performing a wedding, being decapitated, holding a sun or sword, giving sight to a blind girl, or refusing to adore an idol. I took some liberties by having his head already cut off. (Classy, I know.)

St. Valentine was martyred for refusing to renounce his Christianity. He was put in jail and eventually excecuted via clubbing and beheading for performing Christian marriages and ministering to Christians who'd been persecuted by the Roman government. He died on February 14, 269.

While he was in jail, St. Valentine supposedly restored sight to the jailer's blinded daughter. Some legends also say that, the night he died, he wrote her a goodbye note and signed it "From your Valentine" which, I suppose, is where the whole 'be my Valentine' thing comes from.
